The Oil-to-Polyester Chain: Why Your Fabric Costs Are Spiking Right Now

If you've been asking “why is polyester suddenly so expensive?” — let’s break down the full chain from crude oil to your finished knit fabric.
On March 10, polyester staple fiber jumped over 2,000 RMB/ton in a single day, and some filament prices rose from 7,200 to 11,350 RMB/ton (a 50%+ surge).
Factories are pausing orders, and quotes are updating daily.
At the root of it all: crude oil. But it's not a 1:1 link.

Here's how it flows:
1️⃣ Crude → Naphtha (the critical bridge between energy and chemicals) Crude is fractionated in refineries, and naphtha (light gasoline) is the starting point for nearly all Asian polyester production.
2️⃣ Naphtha splits into two paths to make polyester:
- Path A: Naphtha → PX → PTA (white powder, core raw material #1)
- Path B: Naphtha → Ethylene → MEG (colorless liquid, core raw material #2)
3️⃣ PTA + MEG → PET Chips (polyester pellets, the “semi-finished” product)
These chips are melted and extruded through spinnerets to make:
- POY (pre-oriented yarn, low strength, needs further processing)
- DTY (draw textured yarn, elastic & fluffy, ideal for knits)
- FDY (fully drawn yarn, crisp, for wovens)
4️⃣ Finally: Yarn → Knit/weave → Finished fabric

Why isn't it “oil up = polyester up 1:1”?
Each step (crude → naphtha → PX/ethylene → PTA/MEG → chips → yarn) has its own supply/demand dynamics.
But the direction is clear: Crude up → Naphtha up → PTA/MEG up → Polyester up → Fabric up. This is why we're seeing such sharp price volatility right now. It's a long chain, and every link is feeling the pressure.
At Alibric Sourcing Solutions, we help our outdoor/performance knit partners navigate these shifts with transparent cost breakdowns and proactive supply chain planning.
